Port Dover Yacht Club Sailing School is breaking new ground.
The Port Dover Sailing School is pleased to announce it is officially open for business. Registrations are now being accepted for youth and adult sailing programs.
Last year was the first year the sailing school was in operation for the entire summer, this year the school is back with new programs. The Port Dover Sailing School is offering Youth Camps for ages eight and up and Adult Sailing Classes for beginners, intermediates, or those looking to tune up old skills.
This year the sailing school will be operating out of the Port Dover Harbour Marina, in partnership with Norfolk County. That means more building – setting up a ramp, dock, and a storage facility as well as getting the word out that the school has changed location.
“It’s all change in the right direction,” said Lisa Marr, program coordinator for the school.
“We had such a great turnout for our programs that we likely may need to expand capacity for more kids at some point in our future,” said Marr. “The entire community has been incredibly supportive – both in our regular programming and in our fundraisers to help send kids to camp.”
The sailing school is a division of the not-for-profit Port Dover Yacht Club and is administered by a committee composed of club and community members. It’s an unusual model as many clubs just start their own schools from within the membership.
Several community organizations have also stepped forward to support the school with financial or in-kind donations such as the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Simcoe Rotary Club, Bridge Yachts, BarberVeri Communications, the Port Dover Lions Club, the Port Dover Power and Sail Squadron and just this month, the Simcoe and District Real Estate Board.
“It’s absolutely touching to have this kind of support,” said Marr. “It means so much to the kids who want to go to sailing school but simply don’t have the means to go.”
